Note: Former French Immersion students choosing to leave the French Immersion program and attend Elgin Park can choose to take either French 9 or Spanish 9 in Grade 8. The Enhanced French program is reserved for students from Ocean Cliff who are continuing their Intensive French Program.

For students in Grade 7 currently taking the French options listed, your child will be placed at Elgin Park in:

  • Core French (Chantrell Creek, Ray Shepherd, Semiahmoo Trail): French 8
  • Intensive French (Ocean Cliff): Enhanced French 9
  • French Immersion (Crescent Park, Laronde): Either French 9 or Spanish 9 (student preference)

Families wishing to continue with French Immersion should attend Earl Marriott.

The options available to families choosing to leave the French Immersion program are French 9 or Spanish 9 depending on the student's preference.

French 9

9 Elective

(Prerequisite: French 8)

Students will continue to develop their fluency in French through a variety of new themes. They will participate in many activities, such as games, presentations and discussions, that will enhance their speaking and listening skills. They will complete meaningful theme-based assignments that will further develop their reading and writing skills. Students will increase their awareness of French culture and the francophone world. First Peoples perspectives will be embedded. Opportunities for extra-curricular field trips and travel to Quebec may be given.

Enhanced French 9

9 Elective

(Prerequisite: Intensive French, Gr 6-7)

Follow-up to Intensive French Program (Ocean Cliff El.). Enriched Core French 9 curriculum with advanced speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Explores French culture through food, literature, music, sports, travel, and film. First Peoples perspectives embedded. Opportunities for French field trips and/or a winter excursion to Quebec City may be given.

Enhanced French 10

10 Elective

(Prerequisite: Enhanced French 9)

Follow-up to Enhanced French 9. Substantially enriched Core French 10 curriculum with advanced skills. Full immersion: French only. Interesting, authentic themes, high student involvement. Opportunities for extra-curricular field trips may be given.

10 Elective

Develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in an interactive atmosphere. Themes include survival missions, artistic expression, careers, news, urban legends, and forces of nature. Aboriginal perspectives embedded; French culture explored. Opportunities for extra-curricular field trips and travel experiences.

Highly interactive course. Communicate with growing confidence in French in authentic contexts. Improve skills through themes like ethnic cuisine, childhood memories, advertising, adolescent difficulties. Cultural highlights: French restaurant field trip, Ethnic Food Carnival, reading French children's stories. Aboriginal perspectives embedded. Opportunities for extra-curricular field trips and/or travel experiences.

Culmination of French language and culture study. Refine understanding in a relaxed atmosphere, emphasizing speaking. More class time for discussions. Cultural highlights: French restaurant field trip, French magazines/stories, research Francophone artists/countries, ethnic food sampling, foreign films. Aboriginal perspectives embedded. Opportunity to write DELF exam. EPS Scholarship for top French 12 student; District Authority scholarships for exceptional language students.

Spanish

Spanish 9

9 Elective

Fun, introductory course focusing on speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Aims to teach basics for communication in Spanish-speaking communities. Introduces Hispanic culture, places, traditions. Themes: places, likes/dislikes, personality, family, friends, hobbies. Opportunities for extra-curricular field trips. Student reviews: "It's a solid class!", "it's the class I look forward to every day," and "it's great!".

Mandarin

Intro to Mandarin 9/10/11

9 10 11 Elective

Introductory course for beginning learners. Also for those who read/write little to no Chinese characters or speak another Chinese variety at home. Develops core skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking, interacting) with focus on communication in practical contexts. Language learning strategies facilitated. Explore Chinese culture through food, films, music, stories, art. Topics: greetings, family members, countries, jobs. Intro to Mandarin 11 cannot be used as the Language 11 requirement for post-secondary entrance.

Introductory level. Introduces Punjabi alphabet (Gurmukhi Script), vowel symbols, modifying symbols. Develop ability to read/write simple Punjabi passages.
